Description:

Was Mark Twain White?
A Read Me Treasure Valley Program
(Boise, ID – 02/22/2012)  Was Mark Twain White?  Join author and University of Oregon associate professor David Bradley for a look at what we know of the man who used his writing to protest predominant attitudes of his day on race and war.  The program starts at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 1, in the South Junior High School auditorium at 3101 Cassia St.

Bradley, an award-winning author and associate professor at the University of Oregon, was featured on “60 Minutes” last spring opposing an expurgated version of “Huckleberry Finn” that replaced its frequently used racial epithet with the word “slave.” That word replacement detracts from the reality and the impact of a great book and detracts from its lessons, said Bradley, who advocates teaching the book with its original language.

In Boise, Bradley will talk about the evolution of the 19th century southern white man Samuel Clemens into Mark Twain and and discuss the characters and controversial language in Twain’s classic works, “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” and “Huckleberry Finn”.

Bradley’s talk is part of this year’s community-wide one-book project, Read Me Treasure Valley, which focuses on “Tom Sawyer.”  Related author appearances, film screenings, book discussions and programs will continue through mid-March.

Boise has participated in a community wide reading project since 2001, offering an American classic and encouraging people of all ages to read, explore and share literature and ideas.  The project is presented by Ada Community Library, Boise Public Library, Boise State University’s Story Initiative, The Cabin and the Idaho Statesman, and supported by a grant from the Idaho Humanities Council.
