Luther A. Douglas Exhibit and Walking Tour
10:00 AM
The College of Idaho
Saturday, September 16th, 10am-4pm: The Orma J. Smith Museum of Natural History presents "Luther A. Douglas," a film, exhibit, and walking tour celebrating the life and talents of Idaho artist, Luther Douglas (1919-1976.) Born in Star, Idaho Douglas was abandoned on a Navajo Reservation when he was a young boy. There, he was exposed to the artistic traditions which would inspire his life's work--making Navajo Sandpaintings. These incredible pieces, including a 32 square foot masterpiece displayed in the Orma J. Smith Museum of Natural History, capture a complex history of tradition, community, and survival, which guests will have the opportunity to explore.
The exhibition will include continuous showings of the film "Writ in Sand"--a documentary about Douglas's life, produced by his daughter, Conda--as well walking tours to visit the many exhibitions of Luther's work throughout College of Idaho's campus.
All ages and abilities are welcome. Museum exhibits will be open from 10am-4pm. Walking Tours begin at 11am and 2pm in the basement of Boone Hall.
