Description:
'Idaho's Water At Work and for Play' with Adam Sowards

Idahoans have always used water for work and play. As a life-giving force and habitat for sacred fish, water sustained Native communities since time immemorial. When Euro-Americans arrived in the Northwest, water came to be used for other purposes, too. Idahoans used water in all its major industries - agriculture, mining, timber. Eventually, engineers captured its energy for hydroelectricity.

Recreational uses for water became as important as those economic uses. Fishing, floating, and simple contemplation inspired Idaho residents and visitors. Uses for work and uses for play sometimes pitted different groups against each other over this finite resource.

Join us and Adam M. Sowards, environmental historian, writer and professor at the University of Idaho for this presentation which offers a sweeping history of Idaho's water through the lens of work and play and seeks to share how Idahoans and outsiders knew the state's water in public and private ways.
