Description:
Writing Creative Family & Local History: Show and Tell - Family Surprises

Boise Public Library is hosting a new monthly writing series, offered in partnership with the Idaho State Historical Archives. The six-month series will focus on writing factual, engaging family and local histories, and will be presented by Steve Barrett, an Idaho State Historical Society archivist and family history and local records specialist.

The workshops will be held the second Thursday each month starting in September, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in the Main Library Marion Bingham Room. The sessions are free, and appropriate for researchers and writers of all levels. Participants can attend any or all topics - no reservations are required.

The series kicks off on September 10, with Creating a Page-Turner - the Courage to Write. That's followed by Finding Records and Narrative, on October 8; and Show and Tell - Family Surprises, on November 12. The December 10 session focuses on Character and Setting in Local History, and the January 14 session on Our Ancestors as "Round" Characters. The workshops wrap-up on February 11 with Writing Fiction Based on Historical Fact.

Barrett holds bachelors and master's degrees in Creative Writing and a Ph.D. in American Literature and Rhetoric. In addition to his duties at the Idaho State Historical Society, he is a past president of the Idaho Genealogical Society, taught American literature courses at Boise State University and previously taught writing courses at universities in Ohio, Florida and New Hampshire.
