New York Woodwind Quintet
7:30 PM Boise State University
Description:
NEW YORK WOODWIND QUINTET WILL PERFORM AT BOISE STATE FEB. 5 AND 6
The Boise Chamber Music Series and the Student Union Performances
Series will collaboratively host the New York Woodwind Quintet for
concerts and master classes Feb. 5 and 6 at Boise State University.
Unique
among all woodwind quintets touring today, the New York Woodwind
Quintet comprises artists dedicated to chamber music who also are
individually and widely known as soloists. The current group includes
Carol Wincenc (flute), Stephen Taylor (oboe), Charles Neidich
(clarinet), Marc Goldberg (bassoon) and William Purvis (horn).
With a legacy now in its seventh decade, the quintet maintains an
active concert presence around the world and is one of the oldest
continuously active chamber ensembles in the country. It has
commissioned and premiered numerous compositions, some of which have
become classics of the woodwind repertoire, and has been an
ensemble-in-residence at The Juilliard School since 1989.
The Boise Chamber Music Series, supported by the Boise State
Department of Music and Boise Chamber Music Society, presents an
evening performance by the quintet at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5, in the
Morrison Center Recital Hall. The concert will feature a classic work
by Anton Reicha and three 20th century masterpieces: “Wind Quintet, Op.
10” by Jewish Czech composer Pavel Haas, who died at Auschwitz in 1944;
Paul Hindemith’s iconic “Kleine Kammermusik” and Elliott Carter’s
“Quintet of 1948,” which has been described as “more Copland than
Carter.” Tickets are $25 general and $20 for students at (208)
426-1216. For more information, contact Jeanne Belfy at (208) 426-1216
or jbelfy@boisestate.edu.
Thanks to facilitation from the Student Union, quintet members also
will offer mini-residency master classes from 3:30-5 p.m. Friday, Feb.
5, and a chamber music master class featuring three Boise State student
wind quintets from 10-11:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, both in the Morrison
Center. The public is welcome. Admission is free.
Then at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, the Student Union Performances
Series will present the quintet in an evening concert in the Special
Events Center. Tickets are $12 general, $8 for Boise State faculty,
staff and alumni, and $5 for students and seniors. Call (208) 426-1494
for more information, or visit http://www.idahotickets.com. Free parking will be available in the Liberal Arts Parking Lot during the concert.
