The Idaho Black History Museum is proud to present a thought-provoking evening featuring a keynote address by Dr. Les Purce, titled Challenges in Education for the Next Generation of Americans as well as a musical presentation related to the cultural landscape of America. The event will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. at the Esther Simplot Center for Performing Arts located at 516 S. 9th Street in Boise. Admission is free. Donations will benefit the Idaho Black History Museum.
About Les Purce:
Dr. Purce is the president of The Evergreen State College, a nationally recognized, public liberal arts college, and has also served as Vice President of Extended University Affairs and Dean of Extended Academic Programs at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington and Special Assistant to the President and Director of the Research Park and Economic Development at Idaho State University. Dr. Purce's career in the state of Idaho spanned 15 years in both the public and private sectors. He was the first black elected official in the state, serving as city councilman and then mayor of Pocatello. He later served as Director of Idaho's departments of Administration and Health and Welfare under Governor John Evans.
Dr. Purce holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology, a Master of Arts degree in Education, and a Doctor of Counselor Education from Idaho State University. He also attended Harvard University's Institute for Educational Management.
Dr. Purce is a native Idahoan and son of Idaho Purce, a founding member of the Idaho Black History Museum. Dr. Purce served as mayor of the city of Pocatello and Director of the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare.
