Caleb Quaye
9:30 AM New Heights Christian Fellowship
Description:
It was a voice louder than rock and roll that saved Caleb Quaye from a life of misery and drug addiction. He says his rock star lifestyle almost killed him when he was on the road touring with stars like Elton John and Hall and Oats.
But he never let go of the music—which is what brings him to the New Heights Christian Fellowship Church on June 29th. Quaye will share his inspirational music and life story at 9:00 and 11:30 a.m. The public is invited to this free event.
"We were of that generation that some people called the seekers," says Quaye. "We were hippies coming into the seventies, and we were searching for something—searching in all the wrong places." It was the 1970’s and Quaye was making his mark on the rock and roll world. He started recording and touring with his childhood friend Reginald Dwight, who later changed his name to Elton John. He toured as John’s guitarist for 10 years, recording hits like “Your Song.” He later went on to work with such rock legends as Mick Jagger, Pete Townsend and Paul McCartney. But he says in 1982, Jesus Christ crashed his party and changed his life.
It was his 30th birthday and Quaye was strung out on marijuana and cocaine. In the early morning hours Quaye was finally alone in his hotel room when he says he heard a voice, clear as day. According to Quaye, the voice said “Caleb from this point on, your life is going to be completely different and nothing is going to be the same ever again.” He turned around, only to find himself alone. In that moment, he committed himself to finding to whom that voice belonged. During the next two years, Quaye says he hit “rock bottom.” He went through divorce, bankruptcy and suddenly couldn’t find work as a musician. Finally a Christian friend invited him to church for Easter Sunday and Quaye figured he’d tried everything else, why not church. Sitting in church that day Quaye heard the same voice he’d heard in the Atlanta hotel room. It said, “It’s time for you to come home to me today because I have a new life for you.” Caleb recognized the voice this time as Jesus Christ and accepted the invitation.
“Whatever their faith background, most who hear Quaye’s story cannot fail to be inspired, both in the way he overcame addiction and his role in creating some of the world's best-loved music,” said Doug Murren, senior pastor of New Heights Christian Fellowship Church.
