1:30pm – Loft Session
ANTI-DV
Since about 1999 it seems that pretty much everyone the block with a 3-chip video camera has adopted the moniker of “filmmaker”. In what is sure to be a raucous discussion of vision, aesthetic and craft we chat with filmmakers Lovisa Inserra (Buster), Caleb and Joshua Young (Afraid to Merge), Matthew Wade
(It Shines and Shakes and Laughs) and others…about the use of film in the digital age.
Lost session costs $5 at the door, The Flicks (646 Fulton Street)

2:30pm – Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas
True West Retro Film, celebrating the ten-year anniversary of Fear and Loathing, sponsored by Boise Co-op
“We were somewhere around Barstow when the drugs began to take hold.” It is 1971, and journalist Raoul Duke barrels toward Las Vegas to cover a motorcycle race, accompanied by a trunkful of contraband and his slightly unhinged Samoan attorney, Dr. Gonzo. But what is ostensibly a cut-and-dried journalistic endeavor quickly descends into a feverish psychedelic odyssey and an excoriating dissection of the American way of life. Director Terry Gilliam and an all-star cast (headlined by Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro) show no mercy in bringing Dr. Hunter S. Thompson’s legendary Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas to the screen, creating a film both hilarious and savage.

3:30pm – Loft Session
James Castle: The Art of the Film
Join in a discussion with director Jeffrey Wolf and Boise Art Museum Curator, Sandy Harthorn, about capturing the life and work of James Castle on film.

4:45pm – True West Short Film Collection
This year’s short film collection takes you on a wild and eclectic ride through a myriad of genres and styles presenting eight films about the eternal search for (insert keyword here)…

- The Long Wooden Tobogganist, Directed by Andrew Wall
In search of…the Long Wooden Tobogganist. A rare and beautiful creature, never before captured on film. In this film we witness majestic sliding, an epic fight for toboggan territory and the unique mating ritual of this rare icon of the Canadian Prarie. (Running time 4 minutes)
- The Outlaw Emmett Deemus, Directed by Stephan Szpak-Fleet
In search of…trouble. This fanciful yarn of Don Quixote’ on a motorcycle tells a tale of Emmett Deemus, a recently (forcefully) retired meter-maid who wants to live the life of an outlaw biker. Blazing a new trail with his funky old ’57 BMW motorcycle, Emmett sets forth ‘…and jumps into the wind to protect road pilgrims, fight the man, and make some news.’ (Running time 8 minutes)

- August, Directed by Jay Gammill
In search of…perfection. Through the lens of his own camera, seventeen-year-old August struggles for acceptance in the midst of high-school life, feeling he has to drastically change his look to fit in. The school bully won’t leave him alone, and his parents don’t get him either. August ultimately decides what it will take is to undergo surgery to recreate his face to become the “perfect image” of a high-school teenager. (Running time 16 minutes)

- I F***ing Hate You, Directed by Zak Forsman
In search of…resolution? This is a compelling and raw glimpse into a young man’s charmingly ill-conceived scheme to redeem himself in the eyes of his ex-girlfriend. As sincere and heartfelt as it is hilarious; rogue Cinema praised the film as “…a beautiful little movie…funny and touching…”, we simply call it the best post break-up song ever. (Running time 9 minutes)

- It Shines and Shakes and Laughs, Directed by Matthew Wade
In search of…Love? In this beautifully filmed super 8 experimental piece, a young man searches a desolate landscape in an attempt to make himself whole. When machinery doesn’t do the trick, and perhaps enslaves him, can love bring him the fulfillment he is seeking? (Running time 9 minutes)

- Small Movements, Directed by Nicole Robare
In search of…ourselves. Four years ago in Portland Oregon, a group of young women who loved riding bikes started The Sprockettes, the world’s first all female mini-bike dance team. The experience has transformed their lives, bringing them closer to their community and empowering them to live their dreams. Small Movements explores what being Sprockettes has meant to these women, and what they help to give the world around them through their art. (Running time 8 minutes)

- Henry, Directed by Will McCord
In search of…acceptance. Henry tells the story of an overweight, gay Asian male who, over the internet, masquerades as an Asian woman to lure photos of and meet an attractive, straight male. (Running time 13 minutes)

- Jackson Ward, Directed by Matt Petock
In search of…humanity. Aaron is a young cop walking a thin moral tightrope. Ali is a lonely teenager from a poor neighborhood who deals drugs to make money and pass the time. They meet and form an awkward relationship as they both know a secret of the other: Aaron knows Ali is dealing drugs, and Ali knows Aaron isn’t the “good cop” he appears to be. When Aaron finds Ali in a compromising situation he realizes he’s the only one that can help. (Running time 18 minutes)

7:00pm – True West Closing Night Film, sponsored by Priddy Brothers
To Die in Jerusalem, Directed by Hilla Mendalia
To Die in Jerusalem looks at the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through the eyes of two mothers who lost their daughters in one deadly act of violence. The documentary recounts the heart-wrenching story of two teenage girls – 17-year-old Israeli student Rachel levy, and her killer, 18-year-old Palestinian suicide bomber Ayat al-Akhras – who died together in a Jerusalem market in 2002. The horrific incident ignited international outrage and set in motion one mother’s journey to meet the mother of her daughter’s killer. More than four years later, they finally met in an emotionally charged encounter that underscores the deep roots of the Israel-Palestinian conflict. Director Hilla Medalia and Producers John and Ed Priddy will be in attendance.

9:00pm – Closing Night Party at The Modern Bar
It’s all over. You’ve seen every movie, met every filmmaker, danced on a bar or two, now you just want to chill. We know the feeling, so let’s get together at The Modern Bar for a final toast to the West! (1314 West Grove Street)
