Spring is just around the corner, and that means it's time to get out of the house for a stroll downtown during First Thursday. Make your first stop The Gallery at the Linen Building. The second-floor art gallery will be open from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday, March 4, at the Linen Building, 1402 W. Grove St. in Downtown Boise's Linen District. Admission to The Gallery is free.
Highlights of First Thursday at The Gallery include a new exhibit, "Bill Blahd Paintings: Artists, Faith, Medicine, Religion," which opened Feb. 26. Curated by Karen Bubb, "Bill Blahd Paintings" is the culmination of five years of concentrated work from the Boise artist.
"Bill Blahd has been engaged in serious discourse with himself about his profession (emergency medicine), religion, faith, the pursuit of knowledge and what it means to be an artist," Bubb says. "His figures and landscapes are rich with narrative and internal dialogue. The resulting series of paintings will challenge and interest curious viewers."
Bill Blahd (billblahd.com) studied art at Tulane University, UCLA and the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C. He also studied medicine at UCLA from 1974-1979. Blahd has exhibited his work in art galleries and museums around the country. He lives in Boise with his wife, Liz, and children Sophie and Tony.
Music will be provided by Dan Costello with vocalist Leta Neustaedter. A prominent player on Boise's music scene for over 15 years, Costello is an adjunct guitar professor at Boise State, guitar instructor at Old Boise Guitar Company, host of the BSU radio show Music From Stanley, and guitarist/singer in the popular cover band Spindlebomb. Despite his busy schedule, Costello still manages to focus on a solo career and plays in venues across the Northwest. Learn more at hearcostello.com, where you can read Costello's blog, view slideshows and YouTube videos, and link to his Facebook and Myspace pages.
First Thursday strollers can also enjoy beer and wine and lounge seating at the second-floor, loft-style Gallery. With natural light, warm sunsets and bird's-eye views of Downtown Boise and the Linen District, The Gallery offers artists and art lovers a fresh, unique urban space in which to display and view art.
