Learn more about Owls
10:00 AM Foothills Learning Center
Description:
Did you know that a pair of Great Horned owls take up residence every
spring in Hulls Gulch Reserve? Find out more about owls and hopefully
meet our resident family from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, April 12 at the
Foothills Learning Center, 3188 Sunset Ridge Road. The free program is
open to children and adults of all ages.
Greg Kaltenecker, director of the Idaho Bird Observatory and a member
of the research faculty in Boise State’s biology department, will tell
us about this fascinating raptor. He will have slides and mounts of many
different owls that live in Idaho. We’ll listen to their calls, look
at their feathers and talk about makes them so quiet, dissect owl
pellets, and more. The program will start with a presentation in the
classroom and then move outdoors for a walk around the grounds.
Kaltenecker has a master’s degree in raptor biology. He is a
co-founder of the Idaho Bird Observatory, a cooperative, non-profit research and education organization that conducts long-term monitoring of western migratory landbird populations and promotes public education, involvement, and wildlife viewing.
The Foothills Learning Center is located in Hulls Gulch Preserve north
of downtown Boise. To get there, take 8th Street 1/3 mile past the end
of the pavement. The building is located behind the parking lot on the
right. There is no charge and no need to register for this program.
