In Support of New Release Dad, The Hand Announces Shows in Boise (5/24, Neurolux) and Ketchum (5/25, Whiskey Jacques)

Dad (Gravy Lane Records, Hi-Fi-Mantra; March 2019), the new release by Boise-based rockers The Hand, is arguably the band’s best album to date. It’s also the most personal.

In 1999, The Hand frontman Scott Schmaljohn (State of Confusion, Treepeople) lost his bandmate and brother Pat to suicide. In Dad, Scott channels the lingering effects of losing his brother—especially on his father, who suffers from Alzheimer’s.

“I think Pat’s death made my dad sicker faster,” Scott said.

Though Dad was precipitated by reflections on love and loss, The Hand’s signature punk rock aesthetic isn’t watered-down or weakened. Instead, Scott’s vulnerability lifts the vibe to a new level, and when added to his manic guitar work and intense vocals supported by the perfect rhythm section created by bassist James Johnson (Trigger Itch) and drummer Cody Roy (Demoni), results in this powerful album.

On the heels of a hugely successful release party and Treefort Music Fest 2019 performance, The Hand is headlining a show in Boise on Friday, May 24, at Neurolux with openers Tommy Dirtweed and Wisenheimer; and in Ketchum on Saturday, May 25, at Whiskey Jacques with openers James Plane Wreck and Blakadaar.
