Description:
Womxn Are Sacred
October 16- November 24, 2019

The month of November is dedicated to paying tribute to the rich ancestry and traditions of Native Americans. In celebration of Native American Heritage Month, Multicultural Student Services and the student-led Intertribal Native Council present a collection of donated red dresses. Inspired by and following in the example of Canadian artist Jaime Black’s REDress Project, students collectively gathered 75 dresses to raise awareness of violence against Indigenous women and girls. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has reported that “murder is the third-leading cause of death among American Indian and Alaska Native women and that rates of violence on reservations can be up to ten times higher than the national average.” Womxn Are Sacred, with its simplicity and drama, aims to bring to social consciousness those women who have been hidden and unseen before.
